Architect and Urban Planner, graduated Magna Cum Laude (2001). Holds a Master’s degree (2004) and a PhD (2010) in Architecture from PROARQ/UFRJ. A tenured professor at UFRJ since 2006, she is currently (2025) an Associate Professor IV at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU/UFRJ) and a permanent faculty member of the Graduate Program in Architecture (PROARQ/UFRJ).
She was a Jovem Cientista do Nosso Estado – FAPERJ (2021–2024), currently a Cientista do Nosso Estado – FAPERJ (since 2024), and a CNPq Research Productivity Fellow (PQ2). She co-coordinates the Architecture, Subjectivity and Culture laboratory (LASC/UFRJ). Ethel has held several roles at UFRJ, including Coordinator of PROARQ/UFRJ (2020–2024), Editor Coordinator of PROARQ/UFRJ (2016–2019), Communication Coordinator on the FAU/UFRJ Executive Board (2014–2018), and Coordinator of Undergraduate Final Projects at FAU/UFRJ (2018–2019).
Since 2014, she has been the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Cadernos PROARQ. She was a member of UFRJ’s Graduate Education Council (CEPG, 2019–2024), a board member of the National Association for Research and Graduate Studies in Architecture and Urbanism (ANPARQ, 2021–2022; 2025–2026), and coordinator of the CAPES PrInt project (2019–2023). She serves as an ad hoc reviewer for funding agencies (Mackenzie, FAPESP, FAPERJ, UERJ) and as a member of the scientific committees and editorial boards of various indexed journals.
She supervises undergraduate, master's, and doctoral research and coordinates extension and research projects funded by CNPq, CAPES, and FAPERJ. She is affiliated with Ambiances.net and collaborates with ENSA-Grenoble under a cooperation agreement.
Her academic work focuses on architectural representation, with an emphasis on urban planning and design, coded drawing systems, concept/observational/ethnographic drawing, and the following themes: urban ambiance, urban design, memory, environmental perception, and the relationships between city, complexity, and urban culture.

She participates in the extension program “AutoCAD for the Community”, coordinated by Prof. Marcelo Magalhães (UFRJ, Macaé Campus). She also serves as a teaching assistant for Architectural Design IV – Open Studio, under the supervision of professors Diego Anibal Portas and Ana Slade. Additionally, she holds a technical degree in Interior Design from the Carlos de Campos Technical School (ETEC).

Undergraduate student in Architecture and Urbanism at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (FAU/UFRJ) since 2019. She is a member of the Architecture, Subjectivity and Culture Laboratory (LASC/UFRJ), where she served as a CNPq PIBIC research fellow (2022–2024) and currently 2025 continues as a voluntary research assistant in the project “Cartographies of an Invisible City: Sensitive Mapping of Spaces Inhabited by Bodies of/on the Street”, coordinated by Prof. Ethel Pinheiro and supported by FAPERJ and CNPq.

In 2025, she is completing an internship in project management at TPF Engenharia. Before and throughout her undergraduate studies, she has been involved in initiatives that value both collective and individual experiences within society, with research interests in culture, urban space, ambiance, and urban planning.

She also participates as an extension student in the project “APROXIMA: knowledge transfer through the integration of undergraduate studies in architecture and urbanism with low-income communities, through the consolidation of the EMAU and the Integrated Experimental Construction Site of FAU–UFRJ (Abricó)”, coordinated by Luciana Maria Bonvino Figueiredo.
Additionally, she is active in the Student Center of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (CAFAU), the National Federation of Architecture and Urbanism Students in Brazil (FeNEA), and volunteers with the NGO TETO.

He volunteered in the extension projects “Digital Thematic Exhibition Program of the FAU-UFRJ Midiateca” (2025), “Insurgencies: Experiences in Public Spaces” (2024), and “Architecture, Subjectivity and Culture — Thinking Architecture Through Ambiances” (2023). He was a teaching assistant in Construction Processes I (2022), Observational Drawing I, Digital Graphics (2023), and Final Graduation Project II (2024), all at FAU-UFRJ.

He serves as a teaching assistant for the Architectural Design IV (Open Studio) course in the Department of Architectural Design, under Prof. Dr. Ana Slade Carlos de Oliveira and Prof. Dr. Diego Aníbal Portas.

Holds a PhD in Architecture from the Graduate Program in Architecture at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (PROARQ/UFRJ). He earned a Master’s degree in Urban Engineering from the Polytechnic School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (PEU/POLI/UFRJ) and a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IGEO/UFRJ). His areas of expertise include Human Geography, Public Security, Geoprocessing, and Ambience Studies.
Architect and Urban Planner / Social Worker. Master’s student in the Professional Graduate Program in Design and Heritage (PGPP/FAU/UFRJ), advised by Prof. Dr. Virgínia Maria Nogueira de Vasconcellos. Member of the research group Project, Architecture and Sustainability (GPAS/UFRJ). Since 2023, she has contributed as a project researcher in the research project “Affective Cartographies of an Invisible City: Sensitive Mapping of Spaces Inhabited by Bodies of/on the Street”, developed within the Architecture, Subjectivity and Culture Laboratory (LASC/UFRJ) and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Ethel Pinheiro Santana.
She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Landscape Design (Faculdade JK, Brasília, 2021–2022), is currently completing a Postgraduate Program in Interior Design (IPOG), and participates in the Neuroarchitecture Immersion Program (Neuro in Lab). She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Urbanism from Anhanguera University (Niterói, RJ, 2022) and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF, 1987). She is also a certified Interior Design Technician (SENAC, 2017).
Her undergraduate thesis, “Afectografia: Historical–Cultural and Affective Mosaics of the City of Carmo/RJ,” focused on heritage, memory, urban and soundscapes, and sustainable, integrated management. She has worked directly with people experiencing homelessness (2004–2023).
